The RNLI
The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) is a charity that saves lives at sea. Supported entirely by voluntary
contributions and legacies, it is the oldest lifeboat service in the the world. Over the past 10 years, calls on the lifeboat
service have increased by almost 50%.The RNLI seeks to maintain a prudent level of reserves.Currently, the level of free
reserves stands at less than one year. It is a hugely capital intensive operation, requiring maintenance of a large fleet of
up-to-date lifeboats, equipment and shore installations at 230 stations as well as an extensive boat building and
modernisation programme.
Walking for the RNLI
The RNLI beneficiary from this walk will be the Lizard Lifeboat station in Cornwall. They are just beginning a major fund-raising effort for a new replacement lifeboat. The current 'Tyne' class boat is now 18 years old and no longer state of the art. It will be succeeded by a 'Tamar' class boat, which will be able to get to vessels in trouble a great deal faster. As the most southerly lifeboat station on mainland Britain, the crew need the best equipment possible but have little opportunity by way of commercial sponsorship in such a remote location. The monies raised will hopefully be a great help for one of the smallest and remote stations, but one which spends more hours out in deep water than almost any other.
