The Topsy foundation

Visit their websiteThe Topsy Foundation partners with rural communities, making a positive difference to the lives of people affected by extreme poverty, lack of access to basic services and the associated consequences of HIV/Aids. Many of South Africa’s rural communities have long been characterised by extreme poverty and lack of infrastructure, but the consequences of the HIV/Aids pandemic in recent times has severely compounded the problem. The Topsy Foundation, a fully registered and accredited NGO, was founded by three South Africans in response to the plight of South Africa’s rural communities, particularly those in the southern Mpumalanga and northern Free State provinces.

Walking for Topsy

The Topsy Sanctuary in Grootvlei, Mpumalanga (approximately one hour’s drive south of Johannesburg) is the base for Topsy operations. The funding raised by the walk will contribute towards Topsy’s Orphan Care Development Programme. When adults in the Aids-ravaged rural communities pass away, their children are left with family members. These family members very often have the best intentions, but unfortunately are unable to care for orphans in an economically stretched household. Faced with this problem, Topsy started the Orphan Care Development Project. This focuses on caring for orphans and their caregivers within their own environment. Free medical care is offered, as well as assistance with education. Furthermore, participating families are required to develop their own vegetable gardens to supplement the food packs they receive. This participation is key to 'buy-in' of the project.
